To create a new device registration for a user trying to set up an IoT device login int ClearPass and navigate to the guest page as shown below

Then in the Right select devices then create device,

Next fill out the following info:

1 mac-address - the mac address the end user would like to connect

2 Sponsor's name - For this just put the end users NetID/ename

3 Sponsors email - Enter the end-users email address, Although it does not say it this is require in order to send them the password for their device.

4 Device name - Enter the end-users netid/ename then the type of device they are connecting with a space dash space separating the two. EX: xdnathan - Chromecast

5 Wi-fi password - This box needs to be checked to create and send a password to the end user. (When updating a device that already has a password it will send an email to the end user if you change or remove the password.)

6 Enable AirGroup - (Optional) Check this box If the device will be controlled by another device like a users cell phone I/E an Amazon Alexa or an echo pop or Chromecast, then you may need to check this box and add the netid and the controlling device in to the       space provided.

7 Account Activation - Leave this as now so the device is immediately available to use.

8 Account Expiration: - Leave this as a year

9 Account Role - select IoT Device

10 Notes - Here add the ticket number ex INC-1010 or SR-0101

11 Terms of use - check this box then click Create

your registration form should look something like this:

12: After you click create it should show a registration receipt  screen shot this and add it to the ticket as a private note for our records and so other techs/staff know you already made a registration. The device Receipt should look like this:

Technically this form in clear pass was built for a public facing website where end users register their own devices which is why it treats you as the sponsor of the device when technically you are just the intermediary. The primary reason for this practice is because we do not want to let end users submit registrations for any device they want especially if that device could be harmful to the network or other residents.

Some trouble shooting tips:

-If you put in the registration and the device is missing the Device IP or the device name or family it is likely that this device has not yet tried to connect on our network or it is entirely possible that the end user or yourself entered the wrong mac-address.

-If the registration has a device IP in the receipt but the end user is reporting that the device is still not coming up double check the controller and make sure the device does not have the visitor unauthenticated role if it does then delete the device from the controller until it disappears, wait a few seconds for it to come back up. If it keeps coming back up with the unauthenticated role check the device's endpoint in ClearPass configuration search for the device via its mac address, check its attributes to make sure the values there are not expired.

Already registered device troubleshooting tips when updating the device to be on csu-IoT:

When updating a device that already has a registration in when you change the device to be an iot device enter the users email and check the generate password box, it will not send an email to the end users.

What you must do is after you update the device with the end users email and generated password is select edit go back into the device and select generate a new device Wi-Fi password then update device and the end user should get an email now.

(This tends to only work for devices created after csu-IoT was deployed I.E after 8/1/2025)

If the end user says they are still not getting the email after this then you will need to delete the device registration and create a new one.
